Life at the Berlin Wall 1981 | West Berlin, Entenschnabel, US sector
The archive material from 1981 shows a view of the border strip near Glienicke/Nordbahn, popularly known as the “Entenschnabel”. In this GDR area there were several detached houses, closely surrounded by border fortifications, enclosed on three sides by the Berlin district of Reinickendorf. It was a special restricted area that could only be crossed and left after being checked.
There were also enclosed areas in West Berlin, such as the US ghost town in Lichterfelde in the American sector, which was used for military exercises and was located on the outskirts of the GDR border.
The slogans left on the western side of the Berlin Wall reflected the mood of the divided city and expressed both longing and aggression. The gray concrete wall was creatively designed by the homeowners: With vibrant paintings, colorful flower boxes and even as a clothesline attachment.
