Hymns to Bastet the cat goddess in Ancient Egypt
Bastet or Bast is a beloved ancient Egyptian goddess who was depicted as a lioness or with the head of a lioness. She was originally associated with protection, motherhood, and fertility. Bastet later became strongly linked with the domestic cat. She was worshipped primarily in the city of Bubastis (modern-day Tell Basta) in the Nile Delta region. She is the daughter of Ra, sister of Sekhmet, and the wife of Ptah. Bastet is still venerated today and her protection is believed by some to be cast over modern cats. Over time, Bastet's role evolved, and she became more strongly associated with the home and domesticity, as well as with music, dance, and joy.
