Oppo has confirmed that it is developing a camera system for smartphones with a 10x zoom lens. The technology is similar to the 5x zoom prototype that the company exhibited a couple of years ago, making use of the lateral width of the phone to allow the necessary physical depth through the use of a periscope style prism. This time, the camera is 15.9-159 mm equivalent, which means that it will start with a very wide perspective and will approach the middle telephoto. Essentially, it involves three main lenses in one, so Oppo's claim that the zoom might not be entirely accurate throughout the zoom range, but should be considerably flexible.
Oppo says the camera will be in the MWC 2019 next month, but it is not clear if it will be a commercial product. Oppo now claims that it is ready for mass production. Oppo also says that it will show a new fingerprint sensor on the screen with 15 times the active area of the main competing solutions. Oppo now says that the technology will be shipped in products this year.
