Why do living things die? What causes living things to become less healthy as they age? Aging causes senescence and death is due to senescence. Senescence is the deterioration of health with age whereas aging is just how old something is.
This video looks at two main hypotheses for why senescence occurs: the rate of living hypothesis (also called the free radical hypothesis) and the evolutionary hypothesis. Telomere shortening is also implicated in this hypothesis.
Data from comparative studies and experimental studies is presented that fails to support the rate of living hypothesis.
The evolutionary hypothesis explains senescence via a history of antagonistic pleiotropy. A logical argument and mathematical model are used to support the evolutionary hypothesis. Two empirical examples of antagonistic pleiotropy are described.
The ultimate and proximate causes for senescence are described. Finally, the observation that since senescence is due to antagonistic pleiotropy, there is unlikely to be a magic bullet that will end the problems of aging and death.
