Here in the Orc Forges beneath Isengard Saruman fashioned his army of Uruk-hai. This video shows pictures of a LEGO MOC we built based of this fascinating location from Tolkien's, The Lord of the Rings.
In the books Tolkien never really gives us a description of the forges themselves but in the movies made by New Line Cinema we see them quite often so our model is partly based on those.
It sits on 6 large green baseplates which makes it thirty inches long and twenty inches deep covering an area of 600 square inches. Its massive rock walls stand at nearly 10 inches tall. It's built roughly in the shape of a backwards L. Near the middle a large pillar of rock rises up that is connected to the main edge by a thin arch.
The floor of the model is divided up into roughly 4 sections. The first section mainly contains scaffolding with ladders and ramps which lead out to ground level. In this part are also 2 furnaces which feature orange light bricks. On ground level almost directly above these furnaces is a crane which lowers pieces of metal that will be melted down.
The second section on the sand tan plates contains the official Orc Forge set produced by LEGO. We also added some extra details such as more anvils and weapons. All the play features in the set can still be used. For example, to light up the furnaces we just extended the axle (that, when pushed in, turns the light brick on) included in the set so that it reached through the rock wall.
The third section is where the Uruk-hai build the large siege engines that are to be used at Helm's Deep. All of the war machines are from official Lord of the Rings sets.
The last section is where the birthing pits are contained. Hidden in the sides of the rock are 3 holes where the Uruk-hai come out. We also used this area in our brickfilm for the training area.
In between the sections is a boardwalk where the overseer watches over the working orcs.
The model is filled with 24 official minifigs from several different Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit sets including 1 Saruman, 9 Mordor Orcs, 2 Moria Orcs, 1 Orc overseer (Yazneg), and 11 Uruk-hai.
While researching the Orc Forges in preparation for building this model we compiled a few notes from which we sketched out a couple paragraphs. You can read these notes on our blog at http://animatostudios.blogspot.com/20...
