I some times see this happen on SD Cards and USB Flash Drives, folders turn into files. Result: You can not access the folder and even file recovery tools do not detect the folder as folder. So in these tools you have the same issue.
I then use DMDE to edit the entry in the directory and turn the file back into a folder. USE A DISK IMAGE (edit the disk image) or AT LEAST HAVE A SECTOR-BY-SECTOR DISK IMAGE!!
