Color grading is not about replicating reality
It's about using the conventions of reality as tools to tell a story
Consider how dreams work. They're not actually happening, but they seem as real as lived experience because they're made up of concrete imagery. The lighting, tone, and color in that space come from powerful feelings we all experience. Our minds naturally make those associations. It's a universal language. We know how it feels just by looking.
Color grading is the process of building those subconscious cues into every image in a project. It subtly but powerfully leads the audience down the path through the story transforming intangible etherial ideas into concrete, purposeful imagery.
That's the magic of it. Color grading enhances a story's ability to affect the viewer.
So much specialized time, planning and skill are invested during production. The digital files from the camera deserve that SAME care and attention.
They need to be developed just like a film negative.
Almost anything is possible.
The tools are more than capable with the ability to isolate and track specific elements, simulate lens reflections, create realistic atmospherics, film stock simulation, and cosmetic corrections. Literally anything is possible.
But it's not about the technology.
It all comes down to what the storyteller wants to say and what the audience needs to feel.
Visual imagery is magic. It's powerful. It's primal. Making pictures communicate on a deeper level is what I do.
