2021 Citizen of Character, Simon Estes
Simon Estes has demonstrated good character by using his international platform to support humanitarian causes and inspire future generations of musicians. In 2013, the Simon Estes Foundation engaged Iowa students in raising $500,000 for Nothing But Nets, a campaign working to eliminating malaria in Africa by providing treated bed nets for African children. Simon Estes has established various musical scholarships and has provided personal guidance and inspiration to many through teaching positions at Des Moines Area Community College and Iowa State University.
Ambassador Ken Quinn, who nominated Simon Estes for the award, states, “having overcome multiple obstacles of unfairness in his life, Simon is invariably fair in treating all equally without any bias or discrimination. No one better represents Iowa character.”
