Hexahedral (brick) meshing should be used whenever possible in any finite element analysis (FEA) model. A brick element is an element with an arbitrary polyhedral shape, consisting of 6 faces, 8 vertices, and 12 edges. When compared with tetrahedral (triangular) elements, brick elements generally provide greater accuracy and require less number of elements given the same cell size. It may not always be possible to generate a hex mesh if the model contains complex geometry; users typically need to divide or partition the geometry into smaller pieces until hex meshing becomes available.
