1. Write out one octave of the musical alphabet starting from your chosen Root note.
2. In between each letter add the major scale formula
Whole-Whole-Half-Whole-Whole-Whole-Half
This is the distance required between each note. Whole is a whole step or tone (two frets horizontally), Half is a half step or semitone (one fret horizontally)
3. Check the distances between each note - If it's the right distance move on to the next note.
[TIP The half step in the musical alphabet falls between B to C and E to F]
If the distance is too small, i.e. half step when it should be a whole step, you need to raise the higher note by a half step by sharpening it. For example, E to F is a half step but I need a whole step, so I must raise F to F#.
If the distance is too large, i.e. whole step when it should be a half step, you must lower the higher note by flattening it. For example, the F major scale requires a Bb as the fourth note, A to B is a whole step.
Completing STEP 3 tells you the scale's key signature - i.e. which notes are either sharpened or flattened in the scale (you won't have a mix of the two).
A shorthand for the key signatures can be found in the Circle of Fifths. Find out more about that in my eBook, 'The Guitarist's Guide To The Circle of Fifths, available in my online store 🙏🏼
