In this video, I perform a simple heat loss survey on my house to give me a rough idea of my heat loss.

I've started on the road to replacing my gas boiler with an air source heat pump, which I'm hoping with be a combination of DIY and professional (adding new electrical circuit needs an electrician and removing my gas boiler is the sole realm of a Gas Safe engineer)

In this video, I run through the basics of a heat loss survey, what it is and what's it for, before I do a rough one on my own house.

And yes, I did point up for floor and down for ceiling. We all make mistakes 🤣🤣🤣

I need to perform a heat loss survey for three reasons:

1. The total heat loss figure will help me determine the size of heat pump I need.
2. It will tell me if my existing radiators are big enough to heat each room.
3. Once I know the radiators, I can complete my pressure drop calculations.

I need to complete the pressure loss calculations to get a definitive answer on the suitability of my existing pipework.

My crude heat loss was very informative, but I will need to use some more professional software and I hope that will be the topic of my next video.

The MCS document I mentioned can be found here - https://mcscertified.com/wp-content/u...

I'm hoping to DIY the installation, so I’ll be taking my time with analysis. I'm no expert on this subject, but I'm doing my best to learn as much as I can. I will have a professional check everything, but as this is a subject of interest, I don’t mind doing some of the legwork too.

This is order I expect to do things in:

Checking my existing pipework [   • Is my existing pipework suitable for a hea...  ]
Doing a simple heat loss survey for my house [this video]
Doing a room-by-room heat loss survey [   • Calculating heat loss using the Heat Punk ...  ].
Working out what radiators need to change.
Checking pressure loss in my existing pipework.
Checking noise levels at proposed site.
Getting planning permission
Picking a heat pump.
MCS Umbrella scheme to get the BUS
Anything else I think of.
The actual installation!
