Stop turning down money!

Customized hats are an easy add-on to your t-shirt business, so rather than turning down the requests you get for custom hats, grab a hat heat press and get moving! You already have the experience with your vinyl cutter and heat transfer vinyl, so add to your product line without investing in a whole new equipment line-up.

We do recommend picking up a Hotronix® Auto Open Cap Press, but this investment of UNDER $850 can bring you in a lot of money in little to no time while paying for itself over and over again. Not to mention freeing up your valuable time by making job production much quicker.

So whether you are already decorating hats or are just getting started, check out the info below for some pro tips and tricks!

Choosing Blank Hats

Ever wonder what the difference between a 5-panel cap and a 6-panel cap is? They are exactly what they say they are. The panels are the sections around the cap that are separated by seams starting from the crown. If you count them, you will find out which one you are working with.

5 Panel Hats:

• 5-panel hats will have one large panel on the front of the hat, leaving a seam-free area for decorating.

• They usually tend to be cheaper.

• They are more popular for women’s accessories vs. the 6-panel hats.

6 Panel Hats:

• 6-panel hats will have a seam right down the center front of the cap. While a small obstacle, this does not hinder the ability to apply heat transfer vinyl to the cap.

• They may be a bit more expensive, but they are more popular and trendy.

Trucker hats are also popular but are sometimes an issue since the foam and plastic materials are heat sensitive and can melt during heat application. Trying a low-temperature vinyl, such as Perform Cut, can sometimes be a solution for this problem.

Some other tips & tricks:

1. Hide seams by using a thicker heat transfer vinyl. SPECTRA® Bling glitter htv or SPECTRA® Fashion Flock are great choices for this.

2. Use the center seam on a 6-panel hat to center your design!

3. Fold your design in half, leaving a crease in the very center of the carrier. Use this to align with the seam for perfect positioning.

4. Thermal tape is your best friend for hats. Keep your designs in place and your frustration at a minimum by using thermal tape.

5. Think outside of the box and apply designs to areas other than the front of the hats! On top of and under the bill, the back, the sides, your placement doesn’t have to be the same! Use placement to set your products apart from your competitors.
