In January 1982, sailor Steven Callahan was sailing alone across the Atlantic Ocean when his small boat suddenly sank during the night.
Within minutes he was forced to abandon the vessel and climb into a small inflatable life raft.
What followed became one of the most remarkable ocean survival stories ever documented.
For 76 days, Callahan drifted across the open Atlantic Ocean with limited food, little water, and no way to control his direction. The raft carried him slowly westward through the trade winds and ocean currents.
During those weeks he survived by:
• Catching fish from the raft
• Collecting rainwater
• Using a solar still to produce drinking water
• Repairing the raft after punctures
• Enduring extreme sun exposure and exhaustion
Eventually the currents carried the raft near Guadeloupe, where local fishermen discovered him drifting at sea.
After 76 days alone on the ocean, his survival finally came to an end.
This documentary tells the real story of one of the longest recorded solo life-raft survivals in maritime history.
The experience was later documented in the book Adrift: Seventy-Six Days Lost at Sea and remains an important case study in ocean survival and maritime safety.
