The story of a sailor abandoned on a remote island for more than four years is one of the most remarkable survival accounts in maritime history.
In 1704, Scottish sailor Alexander Selkirk was left alone on a remote island in the South Pacific after a dispute with his captain. The island, part of the Juan Fernández archipelago off the coast of Chile, had no permanent inhabitants.
With only a few tools, a musket, and basic supplies, Selkirk was forced to survive in complete isolation. Over the next four years he built shelter, hunted wild goats, and adapted to a life without human contact.
His survival depended on discipline, observation, and the ability to live entirely from the resources of the island.
In 1709, an English privateering expedition led by Woodes Rogers arrived at the island and discovered Selkirk alive.
His experience later inspired the famous novel Robinson Crusoe written by Daniel Defoe.
This documentary explores the real historical story behind one of the most famous survival experiences ever recorded.
