On the 50th anniversary of Berlin's S-Bahn, the once proud means of transportation showed itself in a state of decay. Dilapidated stations and outdated trains characterize the picture in West Berlin. A tracking shot along the city highway provides a view of the ET/ES/EB 165 S-Bahn.
A brief historical review highlights the development of the railroad in Berlin from 1882 onwards and the emergence of the S-Bahn, also addressing the causes of today's low user numbers. In view of the dilapidated condition of the S-Bahn, a partial or complete takeover of the S-Bahn by the West Berlin Senate was discussed as early as 1975 - a step that would represent a considerable financial burden and was nevertheless taken on January 9, 1984.
