Chasing CN L565 on the Dubuque Sub with a Grand Truck Western leader!
On July 22nd, 2022, I headed up to Dubuque to shoot L565, the daily Dubuque to Manchester turn. On that day, Grand Trunk Western GP38-2 4927 would be leading the train. Trailing was GTW 4926, now painted in CN colors. L565 runs west on the scenic CN Dubuque Subdivision in the evening, meaning the train travels in perfect light for nearly it's whole journey. This, along with the highly variable power that CN runs, makes this train popular with railfans. It also parallels a highway, making for an easy chase. I shot it many times between Dubuque and Manchester as the train worked the various industries along the line. In Delaware, as the train was working Hutchison Western Lumber, I had a conversation with the conductor who was very friendly and whom I now know. In Manchester, L565 met L574 from Waterloo and L567 from Cedar Rapids. After the three trains swapped cars, L565 took L574's power and headed back towards Dubuque. The day ended with an incredible sunset typical of Iowa summers.
