How to WAX your DIY speakers
As a young 12 year old lad 12 I worked in a French polishing shop for my summer holiday. There I learnt about shellac and various finishes. I remember, once a table had its finish applied it was then waxed, which gave an incredible shine and feel. Since then I’ve always applied wax to my speakers and wood work.
In this video I show how to wax a pair of wood speakers. The finish is 5 coats of wipe on polyurethane on bleached American Alder. The bleach is a mixture of 20% hydrogen peroxide and 2% caustic soda, remaining percentage being water.
One thing I didn’t mention in this video is that the wax must only be applied once the substrate finish I.e. varnish has fully cured. The solvents in the wax can dissolve the substrate finish if not properly set.
I should also not that wax is almost never used as a primary finish but is instead used to complement the substrate finish. While wax does protect the wood, it is nowhere near as effective as varnishes, lacquers or shellacs. The main benefit of wax on such finishes is that the wax can be buffed to provide a rich shine and further improve the protection to the wood.
