This video is an unedited summary of several local television reports from the BBC Look North and Tyne Tees TV of the launch of the MESSAGE project in Gateshead in September 2008. Here the Transport Operations Research Group at Newcastle University in partnership with Gatehead Council deployed a network of smart wireless sensors to monitor traffic polution in real-time. These, sensors, known as smartdust motes are a new generation of intelligent infrastructure which could transform how we monitor, sense and ultimately manage and control our road networks in the future. The MESSAGE project was funded jointly by the EPSRC and the Department for Transport. The sensors and associated computing, communications and data analysis systems were developed by the university as a collaboration between three groups: the Transport Operations Research Group, the School of Electrical, Electronic and Computer Engineering and the North East e-Science Centre.
