What’s the best way to write a book? Are You a Plotter or a Pantser?
Though these terms usually apply to fiction writing, your choice of writing method can also make or break your nonfiction.

In case you’re wondering “What the ___ is a pantser?”, they write by the seat of their pants, meaning they sit down and let what they write surprise them.
If you’re writing a nonfiction book, you may automatically be thinking, “Well, I have to plan it. I need an outline, and I need to know the important points I’m going to make in each chapter. Otherwise I won’t have the ideas I want to put forward in my book. It’ll be a muddle.”

Every word of that is true. A nonfiction book isn’t an exercise in stream-of-consciousness writing. However, too much planning can stifle the creative impulse.

What’s The Best Way to Write a Book?

My philosophy on the subject is that you can achieve your best writing when you use both the planning and pantser methods. Take the example of a book about your business. You might think, “That’s easy to plan. I started my business, and I made it grow. During the course of running it, I’ve learned X, Y, and Z.” Perhaps you’re seeing the smooth flow of a chronological account.
It may be smooth, but it could also be boring. “And then in 1992, I did this.” “And in 2003, I did this.”
