Called Toms in when other calls didn’t!
Ok, I’m a total beginner and as such I didn’t want to spend long money on a more exotic call. Ol Betsy was a good compromise and I was intending that my hunting buddy who was much more experienced at calling would do most of the calling. He had a few high zoot slate and glass and box calls and has had a lot of success with them.
We went for a 3 day semi-guided hunt in east Kansas, and we’re having no luck, when I asked if I could practice a few calls. First few calls on ol Betsy and a gobbler answers! Then he answers every darn call I make for 10 or 20 minutes! He ends up 30 feet behind us in the woods and eventually we spook him trying to get a shot (note to turkey hunters everywhere- bring a fan if you’re going to poke your head up over a little berm ).
That afternoon, same thing, but ol Betsy had him on the hook for a good 20 minutes. Call- gobble, call- gobble. Again he got behind us while I fumbled with the gun because my buddy, bless his heart, had a shot but was letting me have it instead. One problem with slate calls is that you only have two hands and I couldn’t get the gun up before the Tom strutted past the decoy and went behind us. Eventually he got bored and took another strut in front of us on his way out, and that was it.
I don’t know if it was just those particular birds, or if my inexpert calling was somehow appealing to east Kansas spring turkeys, or if ol Betsy has an extra harmonic or something, b
