In this video, I'll overview Google Ads campaign URL options at the campaign level, but these settings also appear at the account-level, ad group level, etc. Tracking template settings are mainly for advertisers that have a custom click tracking and analytics system that captures values dynamically at the time the ad is shown, then passes those values in the URL to the custom click tracking system.

Again, this feature is a bit advanced and a lot of advertisers won't need it. Although, there is something to be said about using campaign URL tracking templates if you manually tag your URLs.

The primary benefit of using URL tracking templates is that if you need to change a URL and you're using campaign URL tracking templates, you can change the URL parameters there instead of on each individual ad. This prevents you from having to resubmit the ads for approval and losing ad history.

Technically, you don't "lose" ad history but once you change an ad's URL, it becomes "Removed" so you are essentially deleted an ad if you change anything within it. You can avoid this if you use Tracking templates.

More Info

The tracking template is where you put tracking information. You can use URL parameters to customize your final URL. When an ad is clicked, the information is used to create your landing page URL.

A tracking template at the ad group, campaign, or account level applies to all of the ads in the corresponding ad group, campaign, or account.

If you define multiple tracking templates at different levels, the most specific template is used.
The keyword tracking template is the most specific followed by the ad, ad group, campaign, then account.
