Scientists have designed a flexible energy harvester that can pave the way for portable devices that are powered using only body heat. Portable devices used to control a variety of health and environmental measures are becoming increasingly popular. The performance and efficiency of flexible devices, however, pale in comparison to rigid devices, which have been superior in their ability to convert body heat to usable energy.
We wanted to design a flexible thermoelectric harvester system that does not compromise the quality of rigid device materials yet provides similar or better efficiency, Mehmet Ozturk, a professor at North Carolina State University in the USA. The use of rigid devices is not the best option when you consider a number of different factors. Superior contact resistance or skin contact with flexible devices, as well as considerations of ergonomics and comfort for the user of the device researchers. The use of liquid metal also adds an auto-healing function: If a connection is broken, the liquid metal will be reconnected to make the device function efficiently once more rigid devices are not able to heal themselves. Future work will focus on improving the efficiency of these flexible devices, by using materials and techniques to further eliminate parasite resistance researchers.
