Hampton Court, London: a Palace of Two Halves
Hampton Court, by the River Thames west of London, was built in 1514 on a site owned by the Knights of St John. Its first owner was Thomas Wolsey, a trusted adviser to King Henry the Eighth and sometimes described as a 'second king.' Wolsey fell from favour with the King and in 1529 passed the palace to him.
In the late 17th century the palace became the residence of Queen Mary II and King William III, who rebuilt much of it in the 'Versailles' style.
