Tivoli and the Suffolks, Cheltenham
Tivoli is an early-19th century suburb of Cheltenham. It was first mentioned in 1834, when seven houses were built in what is now Tivoli Road and was then just called Tivoli.
It's part of an estate once belonging to the Earl of Essex. By 1845 it was described as a 'fashionable suburb.'
Suffolk Square is a short distance from Montpellier Gardens and adjacent to Tivoli.
It is one of Cheltenham's most desirable residential areas.
The district was owned (briefly) by the Earl of Suffolk in the early 19th century.
The streets around the Square are known as the Suffolks.
Andover Street was once the route of an early horse-drawn railway, carrying stone quarried from Leckhampton Hill.
In 1845 the grandfather of composer Gustav Holst arrived in the UK and set up home in Hatherley Villas, here in Tivoli.
