The book was first distributed in February 1905 by McClure, Phillips, and Co. (New York) then on Walk 7, 1905 by Georges Newnes, Ltd. (London), and was the principal Holmes assortment beginning around 1893, when Holmes had "kicked the bucket" in The Last Issue. Having distributed The Dog of the Baskervilles in 1901-1902 (setting it before Holmes' demise) Doyle went under serious strain to resuscitate his popular person.
The principal story is set in 1894 and has Holmes returning to London and making sense of the period from 1891-94, a period called "The Incomparable Break" by Sherlockian devotees. Additionally significant is Watson's assertion in the last story of the cycle that Holmes has resigned, and prohibits him to distribute additional accounts
