V/f control of induction motor drive/variable frequency control

The speed of induction motor can be controlled by varying the
1. Stator voltage control
2. Stator frequency control
3. Stator voltage and frquency control
In stator voltage control method,
the voltage applied to the stator is varied by using an ac voltage controller.
Torque is directly proportional to the square of the stator voltage.
By varying the voltage, speed can be varied.
However, the voltage cannot be exceed the rated voltage. so only speed control below base speed can be obtained.
In stator frequency control,
the supply frequency is varied to control the speed.
With constant voltage,
if the frequency is decreased, flux will increase which may lead to saturation of magnetic circuit.
if the frequency is increased, flux will decrease which decreases the torque.
this method is also called field weakening technique.
IN v/f control, the ratio of voltage to frequency is kept constant so that flux remains constant which in turn keeps the torque constant.
till base speed, the v/f ratio is maintained constant and maximum torque remains constant.
After base speed, the voltage has to be kept constant as the voltage cannot exceed the rated value.
With constant voltage and increase in frequency, the torque decreases.
