PHASES OF THE CYCLE
Cycle stages:
Stage 1:
Follicular phase (days 1-13)
The hormones GnRH, FSH, and LH stimulate the maturation of 10-20 eggs in the follicles of one of the ovaries.
Stage 2.
Ovulatory phase (length varies by individual)
Around day 14 of the cycle, the pituitary gland releases LH, and the follicle, which is at its largest, ruptures, releasing a mature egg that enters the fallopian tube.
Stage 3.
Luteal phase (days 15-28)
The egg travels down the fallopian tube, where it can be fertilized by sperm. The empty follicle that remains in the ovary begins to release the hormone progesterone, which helps to thicken the endometrium, preparing it for embryo implantation.
If the egg is not fertilized, the endometrium begins to break down, which is manifested by menstruation.
