The prototype TKB-408 assault rifle (7.62x39mm) was developed for the 1946 Soviet Army trials for a new assault rifle. TKB-408 had a gas operated, locked breech that uses a similar mechanism to the HK series of weapons-- G3 & MP5 to name a few. Arguably the first bullpup weapon for military trials, it was tested by the Soviet Army during 1946-47, but was unsuccessful. Kalashnikov's critically acclaimed AK assault rifle proved to be the worthy successor in trials.
