I give you 'Mexilachian Breakfast', a song I wrote for my parents: My mother, Guadalupe, originally from Juarez, Chihuahua Mexico, married my father, Roger, from the beautiful Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. In 1967, after their wedding in El Paso, Texas, they drove 2000 miles across the country to live in Luray Va., where my father was born. My mother was the first Mexicana to settle in Luray. She had no idea that Luray was this far from her home, no idea what to expect when she arrived. Life was very hard, with no one who spoke her language or identified with her culture. But as hard working people do, they began to weave a life together, using the food they grew and the tools they made to cobble together Mexilachian food and a life for their children. This song I wrote to honor my mother and father, who built a home with love that knows no borders, where Spanglish was the common language and where Mexican AND Appalachian food danced together on our plates.
