With good reason, the Impreza was a runaway success; it's practical, well made, reliable and very fast. It also handles due to its rally car underpinnings. But, there's a cost to pay, and not just the fiscal nightmare caused by insurance and heavy fuel bills - something much worse. The Subaru really has an image problem. Whilst some cars make you think of old men smoking a pipe, or crusty-fingered weirdoes eating fish, the Impreza conjures up images of monosyllabic, spotty cretins obsessed with 'Nuts' magazine, and muscle-bound wanking heroes. How can anyone drive this car about anywhere without feeling utterly ashamed -- it's not even like it can be driven without making its presence embarrassingly aware? Image aside, just look at it, is it handsome, is it pretty -- no, it's as gopping as fish innards scraped off the pavement on placed onto a dog shit sandwich.
