UPDATE 9/18/2024: I had taken the OceanGate video series down because too much was based on the "leaked transcript", which I was never fully convinced was legitimate, and now that the hearings by the US Coast Guard and NTSB has began, it appears to now be proven a fake after viewing a 3D animation with the actual text communications. I am bringing some of these videos back by request.

Regarding the use of carbon fiber for a deep submergence vehicle, Stockton Rush is quoted as saying "When you're outside the box, it's really hard to tell how far outside the box you really are, and we were pretty far out there."

In this video I analyze certification from an engineering viewpoint and give some of the reasons why the OceanGate Titan was a very slippery subject when it comes to certification. As far as I can tell, the lack of certification was not really 100% for the reasons typically cited (money). Costs were definitely a major consideration, since according to testimony at the hearings, cashflow seemed to always be a real struggle for OceanGate. Anyway, how do you certify something for which no standards exist? Who certifies these things? What engineer will take responsibility for something where there are really no applicable standards?
