Reminiscent of the famous Alien Face hugger, this little underwater 'Fish hugger' dispatches it's prey.
Derived from 2007 camcorder footage, this video demonstrates the predatory behaviors of Belostomatidae, a family of freshwater hemipteran insects known as giant water bugs - also known as toe-biters, electric-light bugs, alligator ticks, or alligator fleas. I was bitten by one of these at the bottom of a pool when I was around 10 years old so I can testify that it is one of the most painful insect bites - Though technically it was a 'puncture' rather than a bite. Their syringe-like beak first injects a powerful saliva which begins to liquefy the victim's innards after which the water bug feasts on the juices like a Vampire. They are typically encountered in freshwater ponds, marshes and slow-flowing streams. This specimen collected in Sanford Maine was 2-1/2 inches long. They are a popular food in parts of Asia.
