This video is part of a series of grand rounds talks on cardiac surgery topics presented by the University of Michigan Health Frankel Cardiovascular Center.
PRESENTED BY:
Shinichi Fukuhara, M.D., Clinical Assistant Professor, Thoracic Surgery, University of Michigan Health Frankel Cardiovascular Center
OVERVIEW:
Dr. Fukuhara shares lessons learned from his cardiac surgery training in Japan.
Barriers in the Current U.S. Training System:
• Work hour restrictions
• Case complexity
• Less general surgical experience
• Public reporting/insurance carrier metrics
• Despite these barriers, better outcomes are expected
What U.S. trainees can learn from the Japanese training environment?
• All U.S. trainees must realize how great the environment is
• Missing pieces: hunger (to become a master), watching, practicing, simulating (in your mind, NOT in the sim lab)
• Think outside the box. You are professional athletes, musicians and artists. Don’t feel satisfied with mediocre skills.
