The Timber Rattlesnake! All about New England's only Rattlesnake Species! (Animal Breakdown)
The Timber Rattlesnake also know as the Canebrake Rattlesnake is the only rattlesnake species native to New England! An absolutely beautiful rattlesnake species, the timber rattlesnake is one of the largest rattlesnakes in North America and can get up to 6.5 ft in length! A super adept ambush predator, the Timber rattlesnake eats predominantly small mammals like rats and mice but bigger ones can take down prey like rabbits! Ranging all the way from New England down to Florida and west to Texas, the timber rattlesnake is the second northernmost venomous snake species in North America behind the Prairie rattlesnake! Unfortunately in the early 20th century, these beautiful snakes were extirpated through targeted elimination throughout most of they're historic range, reducing their population range in Massachusetts down to just five localized populations over three specific mountainous areas. The Timber Rattlesnake is an animal that deserves our protection and conservation efforts and is an absolutely critical member of our ecosystems and helps to keep rodents and other vermin species in check! Wanting nothing to do with us, these snakes will never chase you down or go out of their way to hurt you! The only time they will strike is in order to defend themselves for example if you stepped on them!
DISCLAIMER
Never approach venomous snakes in the wild, just leave them be and enjoy their beauty from a distance, I was trained by an expert who has over ten years of venomous snake handling experience and this was a captive individual provided by Gator Country in Beaumont Texas, with a majority of Texas' venomous snakes on display as ambassador animals, its a great place to learn about how venomous snakes and people interact and how were so critical in their protection! An awesome spot for the whole family, go visit to see some of their amazing animals! Stay safe and enjoy these animals peacefully and just let them be and they'll leave you be! And remember, they're eating our pests for us!
