🇲🇹 Exploring Valletta, Malta – History, Culture and the Cannon Ceremony
In this video, we depart the MSC World Europa cruise and disembark in the impressive city of Valletta, Malta's capital—a veritable open-air museum. Upon arrival, we take the famous Barrakka Elevator, which connects the port to the upper town, providing a spectacular panoramic view of the Grand Harbour and the fortifications built by the Knights of the Order of St. John in the 16th century. It's an essential stop for anyone wanting to understand Malta's historical and architectural grandeur.
We head towards the Upper Barrakka Gardens, where the historic cannons of the Saluting Battery are located. These cannons are fired daily in a ceremony dating back to the British period, symbolizing Malta's naval power in the Mediterranean. It's a visual and auditory experience that transports visitors directly to the island's military past.
From there, we walk to the heart of Valletta, exploring its main street, Republic Street, lined with cafes, shops, and Baroque buildings. Along the way, we encounter the beautiful Fontana Tritoni (Fountain of the Tritons), located at the city's entrance. Inaugurated in 1959, it depicts three tritons—mythological creatures half-human, half-sea—holding a large bronze basin. The monument symbolizes the eternal connection between the Maltese people and the Mediterranean Sea, and is one of the country's most photographed landmarks.
We also visited the National Archaeological Museum, which houses unique prehistoric artifacts, such as Neolithic figures and objects found in Malta's megalithic temples—some of the oldest in the world. The museum is a true journey through time, demonstrating how Malta has been a strategic and spiritual hub for millennia before Christ.
We continued through the historic alleys to Fort St. Elmo, one of the island's most iconic fortresses. Built in 1552, it was crucial in the defense of Malta during the Great Siege of 1565, when the Knights of the Order heroically resisted the Ottoman forces. Today, the fort houses the National War Museum, with exhibits that reconstruct Maltese military history from the Knights Templar to World War II.
Returning to the city center, we passed the Fonte do Chão (Pjazza de Tritoni), which lights up at dusk, creating a charming visual spectacle. The atmosphere is vibrant, with street musicians, outdoor cafes, and a contagious Mediterranean energy.
We ended the tour by watching the cannon ceremony at sunset—one of the most moving moments of the visit. The view of the harbor, the sound of gunfire, and the golden glow of the walls create a scene worthy of a movie, ending the day with a feeling of having traveled back in time and into the history of one of Europe's most fascinating places.
