This physical model experiment shows the failure of a zoned earthen embankment dam due to overtopping. This 0.5-meter high dam consists of an earthen shell made of sand and gravel, and a cohesive mineral core that contains clay. The breach experiment shows a distinct failure process for each zone: shell material on the downstream dam face erodes due to progressive surface erosion and slope failures, and the core breaks due to water pressure and soil pressure from the upstream side.
