How To Rap: 5 Rapping Tips For Beginners
One of the most frequent questions I get is how do I start rapping? I don’t have any experience, I’m a total beginner, what I’m I supposed to do? Well, there are a lot of facets of rap, but I’ve decided to select 5 of the most powerful ideas to share with you today as you get started in your journey. Remember, there is tons more to learn, but you have to start somewhere.
Figure out why you’re rapping
I think this is one of the most important aspects of rapping. When your intentions aren’t clear, it’s hard to set goals and allocate an appropriate workload to yourself. Are you hoping to become famous? You better block out significant amounts of time to work on rap. You better be ready to learn marketing and hustle. But maybe instead you just want to learn a new talent and express yourself a little better. In that case, you don’t need nearly as much of an investment. It will also help you temper your expectations, which leads to my next piece of advice.
Be ready for criticism
When you get into a new talent, especially an artistically inclined one, you have to expect feedback in all shapes and sizes. No matter who you are or what you make, your message is not going to resonate with some people. And, especially while you’re starting out, a lot of individuals are going to make snide, demanding, and de-motivating remarks. Don’t let them get to you.
On that same note, people are also going to give you praise, which can be equally detrimental if you let it get into your head. While you can learn things by listening to the feedback you get, your focus should be on improving your actual skills. This is the best way to get growth out of your endeavors.
Find musicians to learn from
This one seems pretty straightforward, but there’s two parts. The first part, which is easier and most essential is to identify artists you enjoy and pay attention to their techniques. What type of beats do they use? How do they put their rhymes together? What aspects do you most enjoy? By looking at other artists you can pick out rap techniques for yourself.
In addition, you should find other individuals that you can connect with on a personal level. If you’re in a smaller or more remote location, go online. Regardless of if you meet in person or note, having another person to trust, bounce ideas off of, and talk with can be crucial in helping you grow as an artist. Having a mentor or even a partner can cut years off your learning curve.
Learn more about language
Even if you don’t want to admit it, rapping has roots in language arts. It’s a style of music that typically has heavy emphasis on the vocals and lyricism is an important part of developing your rap talent. With that in mind, if you truly want to improve you should go back through all the things you were supposed to learn in english and poetry classes, except maybe grammar.
Vocabulary, rhymes, metaphors, similes, wordplay and all the other aspects of language arts come together and define how well you can express yourself. The more of these tools you master, the more easily you can create your message in a powerful and unique way. Overlooking the power of these tools is a crucial mistake.
Learn to count bars
There are a ton of things I could put into this slot, and I could also make it more broad and tell you to count music theory, but honestly I think learning to count bars is the most important musical aspect you must know as a rapper. If you can’t count bars, you’ll have a hard time maintaining rhythm and creating flows that sound good.
The good news is, a lot of people can naturally count bars, whether they know what to call it or not. Having the technical base just allows you to communicate it more easily with others. If, on the other hand, you’re having trouble counting bars, you can pick up a metronome. You can also check out this video: • How to Count Bars in Rap | Examples Included .
It can be pretty frustrating to start into a new skill. People are harsh and you may not make the progress you want to see immediately. The best thing you can do is break down your goals into pieces and work on them one at a time. It’ll keep you sane throughout your progress.
