IMPORTANT NOTE: The final version uses a telescope logo, not the RGB turbine above the arrows. It looks great but is a big difference from this prototype.
Mini-Review (read the full thing with MUCH more detail at MMORPG dot Com)
The Meletrix Zoom line-up has become one of the very best options for custom keyboard fans and hopefuls operating on a budget. The Zoom98 is the biggest of the bunch and makes an impression. With its exploded 98% layout (essentially fullsize at this point), it's a perfect middle ground between gaming and productivity. The 2.4GHz connectivity is fast and reliable and you also have Bluetooth and wired. Unlike some of the competition, you don't have to use a custom software to take advantage of these options. This still supports VIA.
This kit is very similar to the last several Zoom keyboards. It still uses the long gasket strips which provide a soft typing experience but that's still relatively firm when it comes to bounce. It's very dampened if you use all of the foams and has the ability to achieve a very deep, thocky sound. remove the case foam and use a long pole switch and it can become quite clacky.
For this build, I was provided with a PC plate. I also used all of the foams except for the case foam since I had the steel internal weight and batteries installed. Removing some of the foams will lighten the sound and increase flex.
Overall, this is a very nice kit if you need a numpad. Read my full thoughts at MMORPG DOT com where I cover custom keyboards regularly. I love this stuff and hopefully you do too. Thank you to Meletrix for providing the sample for this review!
