DIYNate shares a quick video on how to wind a legacy yellow Ryobi speed spool (common with older Ryobi models - 132R, 137R, or 105R) and shows how the string has to be fed through and loaded into the top holes so it can then be wound. He explains the importance of using a string size of 0.080, as larger sizes won't go into the receiving hole.

In this video, DIYNate shares how he winds the original style (old yellow model) of the Ryobi speedspool. While Ryobi's design and newer Speedfeed winding system is much easier to use, if you know what you are doing with this particular version, it really isn't too hard. But, we all go back to the video to see how to do it, because you only do it every once and a while. This video is particular for the speedspool / bump head that has been a bit tricky to find a part number on due to the age and legacy situation. DIYNate called Ryobi to get the model number, and unfortunately, it was even too old for them to identify. Likely, the term 'speedspool' is what it is best known as and is described in the owner's manual. It appears this particular bump head was common with an electric (corded) string trimmer but can be interchanged with other heads (like gas and battery). DIYNate had a couple extra heads like this and thought it would be a good idea to create a video on how to string it. The original model for these appears to have been 132r or 137r, but may have been found on other Ryobi string trimmers. Additionally, a comparable model number that may help with research is: AC04156 or the newer model AC053N1BFH.

Ryobi string trimmers (RY252CS and RY253CS) models may also use this head and the Ryobi Expand-it system allows for exchanging lower heads. This specific head can be attached to a lower shaft and then used on one of those trimmers.

Tips: Make sure to use 0.080 string trimmer line. In the video, DIYNate uses a slightly larger string size (probably 0.095) and realizes that the string doesn't fit in the eyelet holes on the trimmer, so he has to get some additional line. Since the string needs to be cut to give two separate lines, it can take up to 10 feet per side. Ideally, load around that (maybe slightly less) to get as much mileage out of your string change as possible.

Steps:
1. Cut 0.080 string trimmer line to 10 feet (x2) per side
2. Line up the arrows on the bump head so that they point to the holes where string trimmer line can be inserted
3. Push one of the two 10 feet string segments through the hole on the housing; the line will pop out near the bump head
4. Put the end of the string that has now emerged from the bump head in to the small hole and push it in until it meets resistance (it won't go in too far)
5. Pull the remaining string out which secures the connection and prepares for winding
6. Repeat steps 3-5 for the other side / other 10 foot segment of string
7. Wind the 'Speedspool' and watch the string get pulled in / wound so that the full 10 feet for each side is in the housing; stop when there is enough remaining string for the job.
8. If you removed the bump knob, then put that back on and tighten (this step may not be necessary if you just fed the string through.

Hopefully, this video makes it easy to get your string trimmer wound! DIYNate apologizes for the poor camera angles at the start of the video and changing string without a better explanation of why (0.095 vs. 0.080) but hopefully you get the idea.
