A traditional shamisen is made of stiff wood, such as that from the Koki tree or Karin tree. It is the most common type used in several genres, including nagauta, hauta, and minyo. The shamisen is classified into two types: ‘Hosozao’ and ‘Chuzao’, according to the thickness of the neck.
