Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE) is a surgery performed to help reduce or eliminate the need for glasses. During RLE, the eye's natural lens is exchanged for an artificial lens called an Intra-ocular lens, or IOL. This is similar to Cataract Surgery. While most patients do very well after surgery, some patients experience problems. There are risks with all surgery. Even after uncomplicated RLE or Cataract Surgery, some patients will experience unwanted symptoms. One possible side effect of having a lens implant is a peripheral shadow in the vision. This is called a negative dysphotopsia, or ND for short. Most cases of ND are minor and self resolve over time, however in this patient's case the ND was severe and persistent. In this video, I will describe the patient's symptoms and what we did to try and help.
