Aerialod - a free, open source tool for visualising elevation data (and more)
This video provides a quick walkthrough of Aerialod, a free, open source tool for visualising elevation data using path rendering in order to provide realistic and effective lighting. At only 2mb it's a quick download and the results are pretty impressive.
While it's designed for visualising elevation data you can also use Aerialod for visualising any single band raster file, for example showing crime hot spots (see the video for an example).
Aerialod will take any standard elevation model from GIS as an input, such as .tif or .asc files. While the features are a bit limited at the moment, it's a great free and open source tool if you need to create really effective visualisations of elevation for a report or poster.
Personally I've found Aerialod to be a great tool for visualising elevation data in a much more graphically pleasing way than is achievable in most GIS software - give it a go! You can download the tool at https://ephtracy.github.io/index.html...
