Not Adapting to Changing Consumer Preferences
The 1980s was looking way more challenging for Playboy than ever before. Hefner had a stroke in 1985 and controversies evolved as everything was falling apart for the Company. Times were changing and the franchise was struggling, especially due to the increase in awareness of women’s rights and female empowerment.
By 1988, Hefner turned over control of Playboy Enterprises to his daughter, Christie. Christie tried to bring a new look to the brand without changing its core values. She focused on ventures in cable television, video production and online programming. However, by the time Christie took over Playboy, multiple clubs and casinos were closing down because they were losing too much money. Meanwhile, magazines like Stuff and Maxim entered the market and circulation for Playboy continued to decline.
