Calorimetry with a Calorimeter
Instructions:
1. Continue to work on investigating one our our Kemtec Chemicals and post your work to that lesson’s discussion post
2. Follow along with this wonderful digital textbook - https://chem.libretexts.org/Courses/U...
3. Find one acid and one base in your place of dwelling, and post a simple description of what you find.
A calorimeter is an object used for calorimetry, or the process of measuring the heat of chemical reactions or physical changes as well as heat capacity.
The world's first ice-calorimeter, was used in the winter of 1782–83, by Antoine Lavoisier. The experiments he conducted with this device mark the foundation of thermochemistry.

A bomb calorimeter is a type of constant-volume calorimeter used in measuring the heat of combustion of a particular reaction. Bomb calorimeters have to withstand the large pressure within the calorimeter as the reaction is being measured. Electrical energy is used to ignite the fuel; as the fuel is burning, the heat increases and the change in temperature allows for calculation calorie content of the fuel.

Most calcium ammonium nitrate is used as a fertilizer. Fertilizer grade CAN contains roughly 8% calcium and 21-27% nitrogen. CAN is preferred for use on acid soils, as it acidifies soil less than many common nitrogen fertilizers. Calcium ammonium nitrate has seen use in improvised explosives. The CAN is not used directly, but is instead first converted to ammonium nitrate; "More than 85% of the IEDs used against U.S. forces in Afghanistan contain homemade explosives, and of those, about 70% are made with ammonium nitrate derived from calcium ammonium nitrate".

Calorimetry can lead to explosive activity!
Thank you for joining me in exploring calorimetry with a calorimeter.

Key Vocabulary
Calorimeter - A calorimeter is an object used for calorimetry, or the process of measuring the heat of chemical reactions or physical changes as well as heat capacity.
Molar Heat Capacity - The molar heat capacity of a chemical substance is the amount of energy that must be added, in the form of heat, to one mole of the substance in order to cause an increase of one unit in its temperature
Antoine Lavoisier - created and used the first calorimeter establishing the study of thermochemistry
