Around 4 months ago, I made a custom mix of Voyetra Technologies' BALLAD1.mid. I wasn't impressed with how it turned out, so I waited until I got Chipsynth OPS7 on sale to really deep-dive into FM presets.
This still turned out to be insufficient, so I layered the E. Piano Whitney Houston-style (with "The Maverick") and the FM Vibraphone with Model 84's pulse wave Celesta. I also inverted the chorus effect on the Vibraphone, which seemed to fix the messy stereo imaging that was going on (phase cancellation?). I think it turned out decent enough, but I still feel like the LinnDrum (from "Battery 4") could sound more 80s cliche somehow.
