The idea of Niching down isn't one that's researched for small operators.
Tesla is a perfect example of how to go deep first, then wide.
Tesla built its reputation as a luxury electric sports car with a focus on the top 1% of the market (they went deep with a very specified niche market).
After establishing itself and building a Stellar reputation, they then went wide... Developing models to target a much broader slice of the overall automotive market.
Going narrow first allows brands appeal more directly to a specified niche and building a solid reputation which they then use in expanding to broader segments.
