Operations of Terms
Addition and Subtraction of Similar Terms
To add or subtract similar terms add or subtract their numerical coefficient and prefix their literal coefficient.
Addition:
1. 21xy + (-10xy) = 11xy
2. -100abc + 200abc = 100abc
Subtraction:
1. 21xyz - (-10xy) = 31xy
2. -100abc - 200abc = -300abc
Multiplication of Terms
To multiply terms multiply their numerical and literal coefficient such that;
A. X"n ∙ X"m = X"(n + m)
B. (X"n)"m = X"nm
C. (XY)"n = X"n Y"n
Examples:
1. 4xy ∙ 5xy3 = 20 x"2 y"4
2. (-6abx)∙(5a"2 b x"2) = -30 a"3 b"2 x"3
1.4.3 Division of Terms
To divide terms divide their numerical coefficients and divide their literal parts such that;
A. (X"n) ∕ (X"m) = X'(n – m) B. (X ∕ Y)"n = X"n / Y"n
Examples:
1. 24x"12 / 6x"4 = 4 x"8
2. (35x"3 y"6 z"7 / 7x y"3 z"2) = 5 x"2 y"3 z"5
