The Beach Boys- The Old Master Painter ('Sunshine')
This is a slideshow set to my own edit of The Beach Boys’ medley version of the short instrumental cover of ‘The Old Master Painter’, and a cover of ‘You Are My Sunshine’ with altered lyrics. I've also included the 'You Are My Sunshine' vamp section known in fan circles as ‘Barnshine’ as an upbeat album closer. The music heard on this video was recorded in 1966/67 as part of the sessions for The Beach Boys’ legendary uncompleted ‘Smile’ album. The song 'You Are My Sunshine' was first recorded in 1940 by Jimmie Davis, a future governor of Louisiana. It's been recorded hundreds of times by other artists. 'The Old Master Painter', written by Beasley Smith and Haven Gillespie, was first published in 1949 and subsequently recorded by many artists including Frank Sinatra. I don’t profess to know what Brian Wilson’s concept was for using this music, except that changing the tense of the 'You Are My Sunshine' lyrics makes it seem quite sad, indicating a sense of loss. Thanks to the talented artists for creating the beautiful images seen in the video, and thanks other fan mixers whose work is heard here. But mostly thanks to Brian Wilson and all The Beach Boys for this music that continues to inspire us even after all these years.
