Giovanni Pergolesi was one of the most popular composers of the 18th century. Whether by mistake or in attempts to capitalize on his fame and reputation, many works by other authors were attributed to Pergolesi after his untimely death, so that the list of his compositions grew after his passing. As such, it’s disputed whether Pergolesi did indeed write the aria “Que ne suis-je la fougère”, with many suspecting that it may have actually been written by Italian singer and composer Antoine Albanese (1729-1800). In addition, Ferdinando Carulli’s variations on this theme are well known.
