In 1826, at the age of 17, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy composed an overture for Shakespeare’s “Midsummer Night Dream” (in German, “Ein Sommernachtstraum”). 16 years later, he obliged a suggestion by the King of Prussia, augmenting the overture for the stage music in several movements.
Among other things, this is how the famous “Wedding March” originated, a piece that continues to be a favorite for wedding ceremonies today.
